Beggars will lead revolution if Nigerians stop giving them alms — Seun Kuti
Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has asserted that the act of giving alms to street beggars is hindering the revolutionary change needed in Nigeria.
In a recent interview with ObjecTV, Kuti suggested that the continuous financial assistance to beggars prevents them from experiencing enough hardship to ignite a revolution. He posited that beggars should be filled with discontent, which could lead to social upheaval, but that the support they receive from Nigerians serves to quell their frustrations.
“The beggars are the ones who are supposed to be angry in order to cause a revolution, but since we give them money from time to time, they are not hungry enough to be angry,” Kuti stated.
His remarks have sparked a wide range of responses on social media, with many users challenging the notion that a lack of charity is sufficient to ignite a revolution.
Kuti has frequently called for a revolution in Nigeria, citing widespread corruption among current political leaders as a central issue.
