Obafemi Awolowo University Confirms Death of Final-Year Student
ILE-IFE, Osun State — Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has confirmed the death of Oluwole Oluwaseun, a final-year student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The announcement was made in a statement released on Wednesday by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.
The university indicated that the Nigeria Police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Oluwaseun’s death.
According to the statement, the university received reports of an emergency involving the student at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, at an apartment located in the Damico Area of Ooni Layout in Ile-Ife.
In response to the situation, the university’s Quick Response and Security Team quickly arrived at the location. Officers from the ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police in Moore, Ile-Ife, were also summoned to the scene to assist the university’s security personnel.
Oluwaseun was subsequently transported to the OAU Health Centre, where a medical professional pronounced him dead.
The university has expressed its concern regarding the circumstances of the student’s death and has provided relevant information and items recovered from the scene to the police.
“The police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident,” the statement noted.
Additionally, university management has informed the appropriate student affairs authorities to follow up on the incident, particularly regarding the welfare and support of students who may be affected.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire extended condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and colleagues of the deceased student. He also addressed the emotional impact of the incident on the university community.
The university urged its members to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified information as the investigation continues. It further encouraged students experiencing significant emotional distress, relationship challenges, or financial pressures to seek assistance from trusted individuals and available support services.
Bamire reiterated the administration’s commitment to the welfare of staff and students, emphasizing that no student should face overwhelming difficulties alone. He assured the community that further information would be communicated through official channels as necessary.
