‘I don’t advocate for beating children’ — Bovi reveals son broke three TVs

Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma recently shared insights about his parenting methods, revealing that his son broke at least three television sets during his childhood. Bovi made these comments on the Honest Bunch podcast while discussing his experiences as a father.

He recounted that his son often threw items when he was angry, resulting in multiple broken televisions. Instead of resorting to physical discipline, Bovi opted for a different approach. He chose to observe his son’s behavior, believing it was important to wait until the child could understand the consequences of his actions and show remorse.

“I don’t advocate for beating children. You should let children be,” Bovi said. “My son would break televisions for fun. When he’s angry, he throws stuff and breaks things.”

Over time, Bovi noted, his son did develop a sense of remorse for his actions. “At least he broke three TVs. Thank God for capacity. If I couldn’t afford another TV, then the approach would have been totally different,” he added.

Bovi also raised a thought-provoking question about parental discipline: whether some parents resort to physical punishment as a means of correction or out of their own frustration. “Most times when we hit kids, check: are you really trying to correct them, or are you frustrated?” he said.

His remarks highlight a growing conversation around parenting practices and the impact of disciplinary measures on children’s behavior.
