I will resign if Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road project fails quality test – Umahi vows

Minister of Works Pledges Resignation if Quality Standards Fail on Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road Project

Minister of Works David Umahi declared on Wednesday that he will resign if the ongoing Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road project does not meet established quality standards. His commitment came during a budget defense session before a joint committee of the National Assembly.
Umahi indicated his willingness to subject the roadwork to independent testing, a promise that follows skepticism surrounding the project’s contractor. Multiple legislators questioned why the contract was awarded to a lesser-known company, previously identified with generator sales, instead of a more established construction firm. Notably, Senator Adams Oshiomhole from Edo North raised concerns about the decision, emphasizing the contractor’s lack of a solid reputation in road construction.
In response to these concerns, Umahi downplayed the contractor’s background, stating that the quality of work should be the main focus. “I’m just hearing about Maikano for the first time. Whether they are selling goats or cows, they are doing well,” he noted.
Moreover, Umahi expressed confidence in the quality of the work completed on the Abuja-Kaduna stretch. He invited legislators to participate in an inspection, challenging them to bring qualified concrete testers. “If you test it and it fails, I will throw in the towel,” he said, reiterating his assurance in the project’s integrity.
The discussion reflects ongoing scrutiny and debate over infrastructure projects and contract awards in the country.
