Jannik Sinner Withdraws from Shanghai Masters Due to Injury
Published on October 3, 2026
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner will not compete in next week’s Shanghai Masters as he continues to recover from a knee injury sustained earlier this summer. The Italian player has not participated in a tournament since winning the Wimbledon men’s singles title in July.
Sinner, 25, has missed crucial events this season, including the North American hardcourt swing, the US Open, and the ongoing ATP 500 tournament in Beijing.
In a post on Instagram, Sinner expressed his disappointment, stating, “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play at the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year as I had hoped. I always enjoy playing in front of the Shanghai fans, and I’m very sorry that I won’t be able to do so next week.”
The Masters 1000 event, scheduled from October 11 to 18, will feature a competitive lineup, including four-time champion Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and defending champion Valentin Vacherot.
Sinner claimed the Shanghai title in 2024, defeating Djokovic in the final.
His absence may benefit Zverev in the race for the year-end No. 1 ranking. The German, who won both the French Open and US Open this year, has positioned himself as Sinner’s closest rival. Zverev could ascend to the top of the rankings if he secures victories at both the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters.
