Portugal: What I told Cristiano Ronaldo after he left camp – Bruno Fernandes

Bruno Fernandes, midfielder for Portugal, has shared details about his conversation with captain Cristiano Ronaldo following Ronaldo’s decision to leave the national team.

Ronaldo’s departure came after the team’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark, where he reportedly had a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus. Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre reported that Ronaldo’s confidence was shaken after he remained on the bench during the previous game against Norway.

Following this incident, both Jesus and Pedro Proenca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, met with Ronaldo. Jesus acknowledged his error in handling the situation but later reversed his position during a press conference, according to reports. This back-and-forth reportedly led to Ronaldo leaving the national team’s training facility. The 41-year-old has indicated that the reasons for his decision will eventually be made public.

In Ronaldo’s absence, Portugal secured a 4-2 victory against Denmark, with Fernandes stepping in as team captain. He emphasized to Ronaldo that the superstar will always be viewed as an iconic figure in Portuguese football. According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, Fernandes stated, “I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and told him that he is and will always remain the greatest icon of our national team and our country. Our national team is united, not divided. Matters must be resolved internally and conclude well for both parties.”

Portugal’s next match is scheduled against Norway in Porto on Sunday, having won all three of their matches during the current international period.
