Nine Dead in Erie, Pennsylvania Shooting
ERIE, Pa. — A shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday claimed the lives of nine individuals, including the suspected shooter, according to state officials. Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed the fatalities on Saturday.
Local reports indicate that among the deceased are two children, who were found at a residential location approximately 117 miles north of Pittsburgh.
Erie police were alerted to reports of gunfire around 5:00 p.m. local time. Upon arrival, officers discovered two women deceased in the street, as reported by Erie News Now.
The shooter reportedly barricaded himself inside the home as police surrounded the area and urged him to surrender. During the ensuing standoff, additional gunshots were heard.
When officers eventually entered the residence, they encountered several more victims, including the two children. The suspected shooter appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police sources cited by Erie News Now.
As a result of the traumatic event, counseling services have been offered to officers who responded to the scene.
“I have not seen anything like this in my 28-plus years,” Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said in an interview on Saturday. He added that the magnitude of loss experienced by the community is unprecedented.
Lorah refrained from providing further details but described the circumstances surrounding the incident as “deeply disturbing.”
Governor Shapiro stated that he has extended his administration’s “full support” to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin in the wake of the tragedy.
Mass shootings have become a recurring issue in the United States, where the number of firearms significantly exceeds the population, and attempts to impose stricter gun regulations often face considerable political resistance.
