Jigawa warns livestock traders, transporters against animal cruelty, threatens prosecution

The Jigawa State Government has issued a warning to livestock traders, transporters, and poultry sellers regarding the potential for fines and prosecution for instances of animal cruelty.
Mudansir Habib, the Director of Livestock Extension at the Jigawa State Ministry of Livestock Development, made the announcement during a sensitization visit to the Shuwarin Weekly Market. This visit was part of the state’s observance of Global Animal Welfare Week.
Habib emphasized that the government intends to enforce animal welfare guidelines rigorously, with actions that may include fines and legal proceedings against violators. He highlighted that the campaign aims to educate those involved in the livestock industry on best practices, including proper feeding, hygiene, safe transportation, and humane handling of animals.
He specifically cautioned transporters moving livestock from northern to southern Nigeria against subjecting animals to unnecessary suffering during transit. Additionally, he urged poultry vendors to refrain from handling birds in harmful manners, such as carrying them upside down, stressing the need for proper care and protection of animals.
The campaign will extend to various livestock markets throughout the state to promote compliance with established animal welfare standards.
Mustafa Andaza, Chairman of the West African Rearers Association, expressed support for the initiative, stating it would help traders recognize the significance of animal welfare and discourage harmful practices.
The campaign, entitled “Healthy Animals, Productive Livestock for a Prosperous Jigawa State,” aims to enhance animal welfare, boost livestock productivity, and strengthen the livestock value chain in the region.
