Tackle corruption first before discussing subsidy – Sam Amadi blasts FG

Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, has criticized the Federal Government’s recent proposal for fuel discounts. In an interview on Arise Television aired Sunday, Amadi emphasized the need for the government to prioritize the fight against corruption before engaging in discussions about fuel subsidies.

He stated, “Tackle corruption first before talking about subsidies. Fiscal buoyancy has not translated into ease for the people.”

Amadi referenced differing stances among political leaders regarding fuel subsidies. He noted that President Bola Tinubu had removed the subsidy, arguing it was detrimental, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed intentions to reinstate it. Amadi labeled the previous subsidy as corrupt.

Additionally, he highlighted the approach of Peter Obi, who advocates for addressing corruption and inefficiency before evaluating the necessity of subsidies. “I agree with Obi’s approach of making the sectors work better and ensuring efficient pricing first,” Amadi added.
