2026 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences Awarded to Hall and Woodford

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences will be awarded to U.S. economists Robert Hall and Michael Woodford. The two scholars were recognized for their innovative research on how monetary and fiscal policy can stabilize economic fluctuations.

This prestigious award, formally known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, is the final Nobel Prize announced for the year. The recipients were revealed in a statement on Monday.

Hall and Woodford developed advanced macroeconomic models that enhance policymakers’ ability to implement effective stabilization strategies. Their work, according to John Hassler, chair of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences, has laid a “stable theoretical foundation” for tools now utilized by central banks and governments worldwide.

“By applying these models, we are better equipped to address economic shocks, such as energy crises or abrupt changes in household consumption,” Hassler said in his statement.

Their research gained importance during the oil crises of the 1970s, a period when traditional Keynesian models faltered in identifying effective responses to economic downturns. Hall and Woodford introduced new analytical tools to better understand which policy measures might be most impactful.

The academy explained that, rather than relying solely on statistical correlations between macroeconomic indicators like inflation, production, and consumption, Hall and Woodford’s models are grounded in microeconomic principles. This approach focuses on how individual actions of households and businesses collectively influence the economy.

Established in 1969, the economics prize is not part of the original five Nobel awards outlined in the 1895 will of Alfred Nobel, but was instead created by Sweden’s central bank. Historically, a majority of laureates have been from the United States, with only three women having ever won. The most recent female laureate was Claudia Goldin, who received the award in 2023 for her research on gender-related effects on pay and employment in the U.S.

Last year, the prize was awarded to Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion, and Peter Howitt for their contributions to the concept of “creative destruction” and its role in promoting economic growth and improving living standards.

Like other Nobel awards, the economics prize includes a diploma, a gold medal, and a monetary award of $1.2 million.

The announcements for other Nobel prizes in 2026, including those for medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, and peace, were made last week. Among this year’s peace prize recipients is South African jurist Navi Pillay, while Canadian writer Anne Carson was recognized in literature.
