Taraba hunters’ leader killed in clash with suspected bandits

Local Hunter Leader Killed in Clash with Suspected Bandits in Taraba State
ANDAMIN, Taraba State — Shuayibu Danladi Ciroma, a prominent leader among the hunters in the Andamin community, was killed on Monday evening following an encounter with alleged bandits. The incident occurred as local hunters and security personnel responded to intelligence about a planned attack on the community.
Ciroma, a member of the Forest Guard Corps, sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the exchange of gunfire with the suspects and later died from blood loss, according to a statement released by community leader Tanko Bobbo Andamin on October 13, 2026.
The statement detailed that a joint team of military personnel and local hunters had mobilized to the area in an effort to thwart the impending attack. During their approach, they confronted armed individuals, leading to a violent exchange.
After the confrontation, the team returned to their base, only to discover that Ciroma was missing. A search team that resumed early the following morning eventually located his body at the scene.
Andamin mourned the loss of Ciroma, describing him as a defender of his people and community. He extended condolences to Ciroma’s family, the wider Andamin community, and fellow hunters.
The statement urged the Taraba State Government and security agencies to take immediate action to address the deteriorating security situation in the region. It expressed concern that rising insecurity has severely disrupted residents’ daily lives, leading to increased difficulty in accessing farms and markets, ultimately worsening poverty and hunger.
The community asserts that despite the initial presence of armed groups moving into Taraba from adjacent states, their activities have increasingly encroached upon local communities. They called for urgent and coordinated security measures to protect residents and restore peace.
In response to requests for confirmation of the incident, Victor Mshelizah, the Public Relations Officer for the Taraba State Police Command, stated that poor network connectivity had hampered his efforts to reach the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) for more details. He pledged to follow up with updates once communication was reestablished.
