2028 Olympics Qualifier: Super Falcons thrash Comoros 5-0 to reach third round

Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a spot in the third round of the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers with a decisive 5-0 victory over Comoros in the second leg of their matchup in Ikenne on Tuesday. The ten-time African champions completed the tie with a commanding 7-0 aggregate score after an earlier 2-0 win in the first leg.

The Falcons faced an early challenge in the match when captain Rasheedat Ajibade left the game in the 23rd minute due to a collision with a defender. Folashade Ijamilusi, who plays in China, took over her position.

Despite dominating possession, Nigeria struggled to score until the 41st minute, when Uchenna Kanu capitalized on a goalkeeping error and assisted Toni Payne, who found the back of the net.

Kanu then extended the lead shortly into the second half, solidifying Nigeria’s control of the match. Payne added her second goal in the 61st minute, following a well-executed play initiated by substitute Blessing Okpe.

Five minutes later, Kanu completed her brace with a precise header that put Nigeria ahead 4-0. Christy Ucheibe, a midfielder with Al-Hilal, finalized the scoring with a penalty in the 70th minute, concluding the match at 5-0.

The Super Falcons will now prepare for the third round of qualifiers, set to take place from February 23 to March 6, 2027, where they will face either Morocco or the Democratic Republic of Congo in their pursuit of a place at the 2028 Olympic Games.
