Senator Aliero seeks urgent federal intervention over bandit attacks in Kebbi

Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero is urging immediate federal intervention to address the displacement of residents in Jega and Maiyama local government areas of Kebbi State. This situation has arisen due to an influx of bandits reportedly fleeing military actions in Zamfara and Sokoto states.

During a motion on urgent national importance presented to the Senate, Aliero, who represents the Kebbi Central Senatorial District, highlighted that the movement of bandits into local communities poses new security risks and has compelled many residents to abandon their homes.

The senator identified several affected communities, including Jan Dutsi, Agada, Kimba, Alelu, Tanja, Jadadi, Bawanka, Kaba, Zugu, Tafkin Kada, and Gehuru, among those under threat.

Aliero expressed concern over the intimidation, property destruction, and loss of life faced by the residents, many of whom have sought refuge in the headquarters of Jega, Aliero, and Maiyama local government areas. He pointed out that at least three employees of Hi-Tech, the firm overseeing the Badagry-Sokoto Superhighway project, were reportedly killed amid the escalating security crisis.

While acknowledging the Kebbi State Government’s efforts to provide shelter, food, and assistance to the displaced, Aliero indicated that the scale of the humanitarian crisis necessitates further federal support. He called on the Federal Government to enhance the capabilities of security agencies by supplying additional personnel, equipment, and logistical resources to effectively manage the situation and restore safety in the affected areas.

The motion also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to evaluate the needs of displaced residents and to deliver essential relief, including food, water, temporary shelter, and medical supplies. Furthermore, Aliero emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts between federal and state governments to ensure security and facilitate the safe return of residents to their homes once conditions permit.
