I’ve never been an advocate for marriage – Uzor Arukwe

Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has expressed his reservations about marriage, arguing that women often shoulder greater responsibilities and challenges within the institution.

During an interview on the “In My Opinion” podcast, Arukwe addressed societal expectations surrounding marriage and the pressures frequently placed on women. He pointed out that women endure pregnancy and childbirth, adopt their husbands’ surnames, and bear various other burdens linked to family life.

Arukwe stated that these factors have shaped his viewpoint on marriage and noted a shift in societal attitudes towards women’s identities. He emphasized that a woman’s value should not be determined by her marital status.

“I’ve never really been an advocate for marriage because I feel like it is more tasking for the woman,” Arukwe said. “She’s the one who bears the children, takes the man’s last name, and has to deal with a lot of things. Society is beginning to catch on to the fact that marriage doesn’t define or make a woman.”

Reflecting on traditional societal norms, he noted, “Growing up, people would ask you why you weren’t married at 25 or 30 and talk about how they already had five children by that age. Now, there are even women who don’t want to have children. I’ve met at least two or three.”
