Edo fire: Okpebholo blames tanker owner, promises to rebuild market

Edo Governor Blames Tanker Owner for Fire Incident in Ovia North-East
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has attributed the recent fire incident in Oluku to the negligence of a petroleum tanker owner. The blaze, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 15, 2026, resulted in injuries to several individuals and caused substantial property damage.
During a visit to the scene on Friday, Oct. 16, Okpebholo criticized the tanker owner for failing to adhere to safety protocols while transferring fuel. He emphasized that the disaster might have been averted if local residents had maintained a safe distance from the fire involving flammable materials.
“The state and federal governments have invested significantly in public education campaigns to warn community members about the dangers of such situations, yet many do not heed these warnings,” Okpebholo stated.
The governor expressed his condolences over the incident, promising that his administration would support those affected, including traders at Oluku Market whose businesses were devastated by the flames. He pledged to rebuild the market and assist merchants who lost their shops and merchandise.
“We are sorry for this unfortunate incident. We all must exercise caution during emergencies,” he said.
Okpebholo also communicated with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu regarding the event, noting her expressions of sympathy for the victims and their families.
Later, he visited the Burns and Plastic Surgery Ward at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where some victims are receiving treatment. Speaking to their families, he reiterated the importance of observing safety measures related to handling fuel.
Blessing Itoje, the market secretary, implored the governor for assistance, explaining that the traders were unable to retrieve any belongings before the fire consumed their shops. “Everything burnt to ashes. Some of us are widows relying on this income,” she said.
Another trader, Julie Ologbosere, echoed the sentiment, highlighting their dire circumstances following the devastating incident.
