Withholding of NLNG dividend hindering states’ progress – Makinde

OYO, Nigeria — Seyi Makinde, the Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), criticized the delay in the distribution of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) dividends, stating that it hampers development planning and infrastructure investment nationwide.
During a consultative engagement on the 2027 budget held in Ibadan on Friday, Makinde emphasized that the failure to disburse these funds has significantly hindered subnational development, leading many states to postpone essential infrastructure projects.
Makinde pointed out that each state is entitled to ₦250 billion from NLNG dividends, but expressed disappointment that these funds have been withheld until after the 2027 general elections. He noted that the delay has directly impacted the implementation of projects aimed at boosting Oyo State’s economy and enhancing infrastructure.
“This money is critical for our development,” Makinde said. “We had already identified projects that would expand Oyo State’s economy. But now, they have announced that the payment will be delayed until after the election. Is the election more important than the people of Nigeria?”
The governor contended that delaying the release of these funds undermines economic and social development across the country.
