Ogun monarchs preach responsibility, warn youths against vote-buying

Nigerian Monarch Advocates for Cultural Heritage as a Catalyst for Societal Progress
ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — Oba Saka Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s cultural heritage as a driving force for collective action in education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and environmental protection. He made these remarks during a press conference at his palace in Oke Ago Owu on Monday, where he announced the upcoming Odun Omo Olowu festival scheduled for 2026.
The theme for this year’s celebration, “A Movement to Action: Strengthening The Owu Legacy,” highlights the need for cultural heritage to extend beyond mere festivities. Oba Matemilola stressed that culture should be regarded as both a valuable gift and a significant responsibility, cautioning against the empty celebration of traditions without the transmission of their underlying values.
“As we celebrate, let us remember that the strength of our kingdom lies in the unity, character, and commitment of our people,” Oba Matemilola said. He urged community members to foster education, improve healthcare, support local enterprises, and protect the environment to create opportunities for future generations.
“Honoring our forebears requires more than a recollection of their achievements; it demands that we build upon their legacy,” the Oba added. The Odun Omo Olowu festival, which will span 13 days and culminate on October 31, 2026, is not only intended as a reunion for Owu descendants, both local and diaspora, but also serves as a platform to renew the community’s commitment to progress.
In a related discussion, the Towulade of Owu-Akinale, Oba Oluseyi Adediran, urged the youth to avoid being exploited as political thugs or tempted by monetary inducements as the 2027 general elections approach. He called upon young voters to thoroughly examine the backgrounds and qualifications of candidates seeking their support.
Oba Adediran advised the youth to consider candidates’ histories and accomplishments rather than being swayed by financial incentives. “Know who you are voting for; investigate their backgrounds. Temporary money should not dictate your choices,” he cautioned.
He further warned against the dangers of vote-buying and the lure of quick wealth, labeling such practices as destructive. “If you lack a proper foundation, you cannot rise. We encourage you to protect your integrity, obtain your PVC, and participate in the electoral process on Election Day,” he concluded.
