Governor Abiodun Outlines Initiatives to Address Economic and Educational Concerns in Ogun State

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced several initiatives aimed at enhancing economic competition and improving public transportation for residents. During a recent meeting with labor leaders, Abiodun stated that a new government-backed platform would provide essential goods at lower prices, encouraging traders to adjust their pricing strategies accordingly.

Abiodun assured labor representatives that his administration remains committed to making this scheme operational. “Government policies must confront the practical economic challenges faced by workers and residents,” he said.

On the transportation front, the governor pledged to increase the number of mass transit buses available for government employees and the general public. This expansion aims to address concerns voiced by organized labor regarding daily commuting issues, elevated transportation costs, and the overall mobility of residents across the state.

“Improving public transportation is crucial for enhancing workers’ welfare and alleviating the financial burden of daily travel,” Abiodun explained.

The governor also responded to labor representatives’ concerns about leave allowances and the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), assuring them that his administration is giving these matters the attention they deserve.

In discussions related to education, Abiodun recognized the pivotal role of teachers in the development of Ogun State, emphasizing their responsibilities extend beyond classroom instruction to include character development and preparation for future leadership roles. He acknowledged that the quality of education is significantly influenced by the competence and commitment of teachers.

Reflecting on his own educational experiences, Abiodun noted that quality teaching and nurturing upbringing played a crucial role in shaping his values. He reported that his administration has constructed and renovated approximately 1,600 classrooms, hired hundreds of teachers over the past seven years, and introduced reforms to enhance teaching and learning in public schools.

Abiodun praised Ogun teachers for their achievements, which have garnered recognition at both national and international levels. He also commended local students for their success in academic competitions, attributing these accomplishments to the collective efforts of government officials, educators, parents, and other stakeholders dedicated to maintaining high educational standards.

The meeting served as an opportunity for Abiodun to express gratitude to organized labor for its support since he took office and to foster dialogue on pressing issues affecting workers and the broader public. He acknowledged the contributions of labor leaders and underscored the importance of regular consultations in formulating effective policies.

In their respective addresses, labor leaders, including Ogun State NLC Chairman Hameed Ademola-Benco, TUC Chairman Akeem Lasisi, and NUT Chairman Sewakanu Noah, commended the governor for advancements across different sectors of the state. They appreciated the administration’s commitment to timely salary payments, regular promotions, and the resolution of outstanding gratuities and pensions.

However, they advocated for a comprehensive review of the Contributory Pension Scheme, the establishment of a Ministry of Labour Affairs, and increased funding for tertiary institutions. The labor leaders also expressed their support for candidates of the All Progressives Congress in the upcoming 2027 general elections, emphasizing the need for leaders who demonstrate integrity and strong character.
