Ebola: NCDC to pay contacts in isolation N100,000 weekly

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) announced an emergency payment of 100,000 naira per person, per week, for individuals in isolation or quarantine due to the Ebola outbreak in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Dr. Jide Idris, the Director-General of NCDC, made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Sunday.
Idris stated that the decision to introduce the financial support came in response to concerns raised by individuals in isolation about their ability to provide for their families while under monitoring. “We introduced the payment after some contacts raised concerns about feeding, accommodation and how to take care of their families while under monitoring,” he said. “The support is to ease their financial burden and encourage them to cooperate with health officials.”
He noted that this payment was not part of the original outbreak response plan, but became essential due to the issues raised by those affected. “This was not planned for, but it is an emergency. We will continue to review it as we go along,” he added.
Idris also urged state governments to prepare financially and logistically for future public health emergencies, emphasizing that the responsibility for containing outbreaks should not fall solely on the FCT.
