NEPZA assures workplace safety for factory workers in Ogun Free Trade Zones

The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) has pledged to enhance workplace safety and security standards in free trade zones, aiming to protect factory workers and reduce the risk of workplace accidents.

During a press conference held Tuesday at the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) in Igbesa, Ogun State, NEPZA’s Administrative Manager, Steven Makanjuola, emphasized the importance of safety in industrial development. His remarks come on the heels of the Ogun State Government’s recent closure of a steel company in Sagamu following a fatal workplace accident.

The closure was enforced after safety inspectors identified potential violations of workplace safety regulations at the facility, prompting a stop-work order.

At the conference, themed “Industrial Development, Community Impact and Nigeria–China Partnership,” Makanjuola stated that industrial growth must prioritize workers’ safety. He noted that free trade zones are intended to foster investment while providing secure working environments.

Makanjuola highlighted the economic benefits of the OGFTZ, which has created job opportunities and facilitated skills development and business partnerships in Nigeria. He stressed that maintaining these advances hinges on strict compliance with safety protocols and labor standards.

NEPZA continues to collaborate with zone operators, investors, and relevant government agencies to ensure adherence to safety regulations, emergency response plans, and worker welfare provisions, Makanjuola said.

He reiterated NEPZA’s commitment to community development and worker welfare, promising ongoing engagement with stakeholders to enhance workplace security and improve living conditions in nearby communities.

To further illustrate the zone’s community impact, OGFTZ Public Relations Manager, Tope Anthony, shared that the industrial activities within the zone support local employment and services. He noted that the zone’s corporate initiatives include investments in education, healthcare, road infrastructure, water supply, and youth empowerment.

Anthony highlighted the ongoing support of the China-Nigeria Friendship School, which has been operational for over 14 years and serves over 700 students. He also mentioned infrastructure projects that benefit approximately 350,000 residents.

Looking ahead, Anthony reaffirmed the zone’s commitment to pursue initiatives that foster community welfare while advancing its goals of industrial growth, job creation, and enhancing economic ties between Nigeria and China.
