NLC President Criticizes TUC’s Response to Transport Allowance Increase

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has issued a stern critique of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) regarding its opposition to the recently approved N70,000 monthly transport allowance for public sector workers by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

In an interview on Channels Television Wednesday, Ajaero noted that the TUC had failed to advocate for any interventions amid the escalating cost of living in the country. He emphasized that while the NLC has repeatedly sought governmental assistance for workers, the TUC has been notably absent from those discussions.

“One does not oppose something they did not seek or negotiate,” Ajaero stated. He questioned the TUC’s objection to the transport allowance, arguing that they had not made any requests for intervention during previous negotiations related to the rising cost of living.

“Why is the TUC challenging what was secured for the workers when it is evident that the NLC was acting independently all along?” he asked.

The TUC recently rejected the N70,000 transport allowance, asserting that a monthly amount of N300,000 should be provided instead. The government’s decision to implement the N70,000 allowance comes amidst a surge in fuel prices and increasing calls for a reassessment of the minimum wage.
