Anambra State, Nigeria — Otti delivered a thought-provoking address during an annual public lecture series held Thursday to honor Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, chairman of Chisco Group of Companies, on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The event was organized by Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University to celebrate not only Anyaegbu’s contributions to the transportation sector but also the establishment of its new Department of Transportation.
The lecture took place on the university’s campus and included a groundbreaking ceremony for the Chidi Anyaegbu Resource Center as well as the unveiling of a commemorative book titled Platinum Footprints of Enterprise: The Life, Leadership, and Legacies of Chief Chidi Anyaegbu.
In his speech, Otti emphasized the necessity for a shift away from traditional business models, particularly sole proprietorships. “There is a need for us to rethink the model,” he said. “Individual business ventures are becoming too restrictive. We should explore shared ownership and seek ways to attract financial backing. Competition is not something to dread; it prompts us to innovate and step outside our comfort zones.”
Otti urged business leaders to abandon outdated philosophies of individualism, citing the limits of traditional practices exemplified by names like Okonkwo and Sons or Okafor and Bros Limited. He highlighted essential traits for business success, stating that trustworthiness, dedication, and hard work are irreplaceable by technology.
“Trust is a significant asset in business,” Otti remarked. “You can’t substitute diligence and trustworthiness for technology. Young entrepreneurs must prepare themselves for stiffer competition, as building trust will facilitate referrals and business growth.”
Former Imo State Governor Chief Achike Udenwa, who chaired the occasion, underscored the celebration of hard work, success, and philanthropy. “We are honoring the qualities that led to success, such as discipline and determination,” Udenwa said. “Many have tried and failed, sometimes despite those traits, and we must acknowledge the role of faith in achieving success.”
Udenwa also encouraged attendees to emulate Anyaegbu’s philanthropic model, which extends beyond his hometown to help others in need. “Once God blesses you, prioritize helping others to succeed as well,” he urged.
Professor Kate Omenugha, Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, spoke about the establishment of the Department of Transportation, noting its significance in providing students with an academic understanding of the transport sector. “Transportation is not just about profit; it’s about service to humanity,” she said. “This is what Chief Chidi Anyaegbu represents in the Nigerian transportation industry.”
The day’s events celebrated not only Anyaegbu’s achievements but also offered a platform for discussing the future of business and transportation in Nigeria.
