Abia: CP warns officers against arresting suspects by proxy

Police Commissioner Addresses Accountability and Professionalism in Abia State

The Commissioner of Police for the Abia State Police Command, CP Wilfred Afolabi, has expressed disapproval of the practice of arresting individuals for offenses committed by others. During a strategic meeting with the command’s management team and Area Commanders, Afolabi emphasized the importance of accountability within the force.

In his address, Afolabi reiterated that any form of public extortion by officers while performing their duties would be strictly prohibited. He organized the meeting to enhance supervision, discipline, professionalism, and accountability across the command.

To bolster professionalism, Afolabi announced the deployment of the X squad, a unit tasked with monitoring officer conduct. He also mandated that all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) ensure the creation and maintenance of crime maps at their respective stations, which should also be made available to Area Intelligence Officers (AIOs) and Divisional Intelligence Officers (DIOs).

The Commissioner directed that these crime maps be updated daily to improve crime mapping, strengthen intelligence gathering, and support proactive policing. Additionally, he called for enhanced security measures at police stations to fortify station guards.

Afolabi also stressed the necessity of adhering to the Nigeria Police Force’s social media policy among officers. He reaffirmed the command’s dedication to the safety and security of the residents of Abia State.
