‘Tinubu’s government needs to listen more’ – Emir Sanusi

Emir of Kano Urges Government to Address Economic Concerns

KANO, Nigeria — Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi criticized the Nigerian presidency for its response to public discussions about poverty and hardship, stating that such concerns should not be dismissed as hostile criticism of President Bola Tinubu.

Sanusi made these remarks during the Oxford Global Think Tank conference, organized by Arunma Oteh, the former Director General of the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission.

He urged Tinubu’s administration to engage more constructively with citizens. “It’s not every time people talk about poverty and difficulty that you just issue a statement from the Villa and condemn them as enemies of the government or an attack on the president,” Sanusi said. “That is not how to respond.”

The Emir emphasized the urgency of addressing the nation’s economic challenges, warning of a potential crisis. “We were heading towards hyperinflation,” he stated. “People need to understand that we were on the brink of complete economic collapse in 2023. If we do not address these issues, we are going into crisis.”
