FG orders accelerated implementation of Niger Basin climate change programme

The federal government has directed the expedited implementation of the Programme for Integrated Development and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Niger Basin (PIDACC/NB) to maximize benefits for targeted communities.

Professor Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, issued the directive during a meeting with Baba Musa, the National Project Coordinator of PIDACC, and the Managing Directors of the four River Basin Development Authorities.

Utsev characterized PIDACC as a key initiative designed to enhance the resilience of ecosystems, natural resources, and vulnerable populations against the impacts of climate change in the Niger Basin. He emphasized the importance of the program to national socio-economic development, underscoring the necessity for heightened commitment and urgency to overcome implementation challenges.

“The success of the program should not be gauged merely by the quantity of projects initiated or funds allocated, but rather by the concrete improvements it delivers to the lives of beneficiaries,” Utsev remarked.

He instructed that all outstanding issues be promptly identified and resolved, while advocating for strengthened monitoring and supervision mechanisms to ensure accountability and timely project delivery.

Ali Ibrahim Dallah, the acting Permanent Secretary, assured that the Ministry would collaborate closely with the PIDACC National Project Coordinator and the Managing Directors of the four River Basin Authorities to address existing gaps and facilitate the project’s completion by next year.
