Three Nigerians arrested in Ghana over alleged robbery of bank customers

Three Suspects Arrested in Connection with Bank Robberies in Ghana; One Still at Large
KUMASI, Ghana — Three men have been arrested in connection with a series of bank robberies targeting customers in the Ashanti Region. The suspects, identified as Aboy Promise, 30, Favour Uwalaka, 45, and Kingsley, 35, are accused of being part of a criminal syndicate that monitored bank activities. A fourth alleged member, Chinedu, also known as Alhaji, remains on the run.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The statement, signed by Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, head of the Public Affairs Unit, detailed the operation leading to the arrests.
According to police reports, the operation was executed on October 31 at approximately 11:30 p.m. by a Special Team from the Inspector-General of Police, which included members of the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Directorate.
Officers initially apprehended Aboy Promise and Favour Uwalaka at a hotel in Moshie Zongo, where a search revealed GH¢1,600 in cash, a variety of mobile phones, a Royal motorcycle, and a master key believed to have been used for unauthorized access to vehicles belonging to bank customers.
During questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted to their involvement in the bank robberies and provided information about two accomplices, including Kingsley and Chinedu. Based on this information, authorities arrested Kingsley at another hotel in Dechemso, a suburb of Kumasi.
Chinedu, however, is still at large, prompting police to request assistance from the public in locating him.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the alleged syndicate monitored banking facilities, targeting customers who withdrew significant amounts of cash and then following them to commit robberies. The suspects are accused of using a master key to break into unattended vehicles belonging to bank customers, stealing cash and valuables.
The police further stated that the arrested suspects confessed to robbing a bank customer of GH¢15,000 on October 27, 2026, shortly after the victim withdrew the funds from Kwamang Rural Bank. They reportedly admitted to similar incidents near the Atonsu branch of Fidelity Bank and the Ahodwo branch of Access Bank, among other locations in Kumasi and its surroundings.
The three detainees have been handed over to the Ashanti Regional Police Command and are currently assisting with ongoing investigations.
In light of these events, the police have urged bank customers to exercise caution, particularly when withdrawing large sums of money, and to remain vigilant of their surroundings. Additionally, motorists are advised against leaving cash or valuables unattended in vehicles.
Authorities encourage anyone with information regarding Chinedu’s whereabouts to contact the nearest police station or reach the Ghana Police Service through its emergency numbers: 191, 112, or the toll-free MTN and Telecel line 18555.
The police reiterated their commitment to combating robbery and other criminal activities in the Ashanti Region, thanking residents for their continued cooperation.
