Rapists should be castrated, burnt alive – Singer Simi

Afrobeats Singer Simi Calls for Capital Punishment for Rapists Amid Sexual Assault Crisis in Nigeria

Afrobeats artist Simisola Kosoko, widely known as Simi, has ignited a contentious debate following her call for capital punishment for rapists. Her remarks come as Nigeria faces a surge in sexual assault allegations reported across various regions in recent weeks.

On Tuesday night, Simi took to social media to express her frustration over the escalating crisis, urging both citizens and governmental authorities to take decisive action against sexual violence. “I’m sick of this. Stop raping women. They need to castrate rapists and burn them,” she stated in a post on platform X.

Her proposal for harsh penalties has stirred controversy, prompting discussions about whether similar consequences should apply to individuals who falsely accuse others of rape. In response to the backlash, Simi clarified that her focus remains on advocating for actual victims of sexual assault, not those who may be falsely accused, which further fueled the debate.

Addressing criticism from some male fans, Simi emphasized her commitment to supporting survivors of sexual violence. She highlighted the alarming prevalence of sexual assault among women, asserting that nearly all the women she knows have experienced some form of assault in their lives.

“How many of your friends have actually assaulted women?” she questioned. “Women are terrified to go out. Women in their homes are not safe either. Ask your sisters. Ask your female friends and your girlfriends. Ask your wives. We’re not all crazy. Stop raping women,” she added.

Simi also called on men to take responsibility and hold each other accountable, suggesting that a lack of action contributes to an environment that enables such crimes.
