Nigeria needs help to fight terror – Shehu Sani welcomes US security support

Former Senator Advocates for U.S.-Nigeria Security Collaboration

Former Senator Shehu Sani has expressed his support for the expanding security collaboration between Nigeria and the United States, calling it a crucial move to restore peace in the country.

In an interview on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” on Wednesday, Sani addressed the recent arrival of U.S. troops in Nigeria, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the ongoing threat posed by terrorist activities. “We can’t continue to fold our arms while terrorists continue to slaughter and kidnap our people, and then close our doors against support from other countries,” he remarked.

The Nigerian Defense Headquarters confirmed on Monday that 100 U.S. troops and accompanying military equipment had entered the country. Defense spokesman Samaila Uba clarified that the deployment is part of a security agreement between the two nations.

While the development has sparked debate, with some critics voicing concerns about Nigeria’s sovereignty, Sani acknowledged their worries but underscored the severity of Nigeria’s security challenges. He stated, “I understand their distrust and fears about the U.S. troops on our soil. Unfortunately, our ‘sovereignty’ has already been violated by foreign terrorists.”

Sani further noted that international military cooperation is a common practice among nations facing similar threats.
