Mother, son, escape death as vehicle somersaults in Lagos

Mother and Son Escape Serious Injury in Lagos SUV Accident

LAGOS — A mother and her son narrowly escaped serious injury Wednesday morning when their Lexus SUV overturned multiple times at the New York State Coalition (NYSC) bus stop along the LASU-Isheri Expressway.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reported that the incident was a serious, lone vehicle accident. According to authorities, the SUV, with registration number KJA 39 JT, was traveling from Isheri to Igando when the driver lost control. The vehicle flipped three times before coming to a stop amid morning traffic.

Rescue efforts began promptly, with LASTMA officials on-site helping to extricate the victims from the damaged vehicle. Both the mother and son sustained visible bruises and mild injuries but were able to exit the wreckage.

The Nigeria Police Force from the Igando Division also responded, managing the crowd and securing the scene during the rescue operation. Family members arrived shortly thereafter and transported the victims for medical care.

In an effort to prevent further accidents and to alleviate traffic congestion, LASTMA coordinated with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) to remove the wreckage from the road. The vehicle was subsequently handed over to police for further investigation.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed relief that no fatalities occurred in the incident. He urged motorists to refrain from speeding and to conduct regular vehicle maintenance, especially checks on critical safety components like brakes.

“Excessive speed, when compounded by mechanical deficiencies, constitutes a dangerous precursor to severe roadway tragedies on major expressways,” Bakare-Oki said.
