The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reiterated its dedication to regulatory leadership and stakeholder engagement in developing a National Action Plan for maritime decarbonization in Nigeria.

During a stakeholders’ workshop focused on the National Maritime Decarbonization Action Plan, NIMASA Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola characterized the meeting as essential for achieving the Federal Government’s objectives related to the blue economy and climate initiatives.

Engr. Fatai Adeyemi, NIMASA’s Executive Director of Operations, represented Mobereola at the event. He emphasized the importance of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) GreenVoyage2050 Project, a technical partnership aimed at assisting developing countries in executing the IMO Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Strategy.

“The National Action Plan we are formulating will consider national realities, utilize existing capacities, address identified gaps, and align with the broader economic and environmental priorities of the federal government,” Adeyemi stated.

Mobereola added, “This transition is not merely about compliance with international obligations; it is about protecting our marine environment, safeguarding public health, strengthening the blue economy, and ensuring our maritime industry is competitive and ready for the future.”

Astrid Dispert, Technical Manager of the IMO GreenVoyage2050 Project, highlighted the initiative’s goal to develop a cohesive regulatory framework aimed at expediting maritime decarbonization. She stressed that NIMASA plays a crucial role in advancing the project at the national level.
