Utilize health benefits of fasting beyond religious obligation – Cleric to Muslim faithful

Islamic Scholar Advocates for the Health Benefits of Fasting During Ramadan
Abeokuta, Nigeria — Sheikh Abdulfatai Raji As-Thaqofy, a prominent Islamic scholar, urged Muslim faithful to recognize the medicinal advantages of fasting, particularly during Ramadan, at the 2026 Ramadan Lecture held on Tuesday. The event was organized by the Ogun State chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (FIBAN).
Titled “Fasting Beyond Hunger: Sustaining Hope and Integrity in an Era of Economic Inflation,” the lecture drew attention to the broader implications of fasting beyond its role as a religious duty.
In his address, Sheikh As-Thaqofy emphasized that the practice of fasting holds health benefits, stating that its origins stem from divine principles intended to promote sustainability, even among animals. He noted that many individuals limit their understanding of fasting to a mere obedience to Allah during Ramadan.
Highlighting aspects of modern medicine, Sheikh As-Thaqofy pointed out that medical professionals often recommend fasting as a therapeutic measure for patients with specific health issues, reinforcing the claim that fasting contributes positively to overall well-being.
He encouraged Muslims to fully embrace fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam, and not to overlook its significance in their lives.
The chairman of the event, Alhaji Samsudeen Apelogun, the Asiwaju Adinni and Amir Hajj of Ogun State, echoed the need for media professionals and the broader community to cultivate integrity, hope, and empathy amid economic difficulties. He described integrity as an essential asset during challenging times.
Represented by Imam Mikhail Adesanya, the Eketa Adinni of Remo Kingdom, Apelogun emphasized that fasting encompasses more than abstaining from food and drink. He characterized it as a spiritual practice designed to foster piety, or Taqwa, and moral awareness.
Quoting from the Qur’an (2:183), he reminded participants that fasting is intended to develop righteousness and self-control. In light of current economic challenges, he noted that Ramadan serves as a lesson in resilience, empathy, and social responsibility.
Citing a Hadith recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Apelogun warned that fasting without integrity is incomplete. He cautioned against dishonesty and unethical behavior, particularly during troublesome economic times.
