IWD: Rights on paper must translate to justice for women – Iyabo Obasanjo

Iyabo Obasanjo Calls for Action on International Women’s Day

Ogun State governorship aspirant Iyabo Obasanjo, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), emphasized the need for justice and equality for women and girls in her statement commemorating International Women’s Day.

In a message released on Sunday, Obasanjo remarked that the annual observance should push for tangible changes in society, rather than mere policy enactments. “Fellow Ogun Women, today we join millions around the globe to celebrate International Women’s Day,” she stated. “This year’s theme, ‘Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,’ serves as a powerful reminder to move from promises to actionable results.”

Obasanjo acknowledged that, despite many countries establishing legal protections for women, the actual conditions often do not align with these commitments. “Most nations have laws on paper regarding equal pay and anti-discrimination, yet the reality shows that a right on paper does not equate to justice in practice,” she said.

She argued that justice must manifest in the everyday experiences of women across various spheres, such as professional settings and healthcare. “Justice occurs when a woman enters a courtroom, a boardroom, or a doctor’s office and is regarded as an equal human being. It bridges the gap between the law and our lived reality. However, achieving justice requires intentional action,” Obasanjo added.

She asserted that meaningful progress requires confronting implicit biases and investing in the health and safety of women and girls worldwide. “We must challenge the ‘quiet’ biases in our workplaces and ensure that we invest in girls’ wellbeing in every community, not just where it is convenient,” she noted.

Obasanjo expressed her confidence in the support she receives from women, countering the notion that women are often adversaries. “I do not believe that women are each other’s greatest enemies. I see the women around me as my greatest supporters, shaped by mentorship from strong figures in my life,” she stated.

She highlighted the importance of greater female representation in leadership roles as a means to inspire future generations. “If elected as the first female governor in Nigeria, it will serve as a significant milestone for women and encourage girls to pursue their aspirations,” she said.

In closing, Obasanjo called for collective efforts to enhance women’s participation in shaping the future of the nation.
