Abia Assembly member, Obasi joins LP after closed-door meeting with Otti

Ohafia North Lawmaker Leaves PDP for Labour Party

Abia State, Nigeria — Mandela Obasi, the representative for the Ohafia North constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP).

Obasi made the announcement on Wednesday during a press briefing at the residence of Governor Alex Otti in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area. The lawmaker had just concluded a closed-door meeting with Governor Otti, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, and other political figures.

In explaining his shift to the Labour Party, Obasi cited what he described as the significant developments initiated by Governor Otti across Abia State, along with internal crises within the PDP that influenced his decision.

“I am leaving PDP because we no longer have a leader,” Obasi said. “Some members of PDP are already aligned with other parties, so it begs the question of my continued affiliation. I am one of the few remaining members of PDP in the Abia State House of Assembly.”

He also noted that a future date would be set to facilitate the transition of his supporters into the LP.

With Obasi’s departure, the PDP is left with only one lawmaker in the Abia State House of Assembly. Earlier on the same day, Senator Austin Akobundu, who represents the Abia Central district, also resigned from the PDP, citing similar concerns over internal party strife.
