Police arrest 7 over alleged attacks on officers in Edo

Seven Arrested Following Attack on Police in Edo State

The Edo State Police Command has arrested seven individuals in connection with an attack on its personnel during a communal conflict in the region.

The incident occurred on March 7, 2026, amid tensions between the Ogbeson and Iguoshodin communities. Reports indicate that the violence erupted as the Ogbeson community celebrated the commissioning of a new elder council hall, known as an Oguedion.

According to sources, the Ogbeson community alleged that the shootout was orchestrated in collaboration with police officers from Iguoshodin. Several individuals, including police officers, sustained varying degrees of injuries during the altercation.

Emergency services transported the injured police officers to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Confirming the situation, Edo State Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eno Ikoedem acknowledged the long-standing disputes between the two communities. She noted that members of the Iguoshodin community had previously submitted a petition to the police requesting intervention.

“Operatives of the Intelligence Response Team, accompanied by some members of the Iguoshodin community, visited Ogbeson on Saturday to invite community elders for questioning in an effort to resolve the dispute. However, upon their arrival, some individuals from the Ogbeson community reportedly opened fire on the officers,” Ikoedem stated.

Two police officers were confirmed to be receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the attack.

The police spokesperson confirmed that seven suspects have been apprehended, including the alleged ringleader, Sunday Omonigo. Law enforcement officials recovered a pump-action shotgun, a battle axe, and cartridges believed to have been used against the police during the incident.

Edo State Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika urged community leaders to prevent acts of violence, reaffirming the command’s commitment to apprehending all those involved in the attack.
