Benue State Police Increase Security After Deadly Attack on Farmers
The Benue State Police Command has heightened security measures following a deadly assault on farmers in the Apa Local Government Area, resulting in the recovery of six bodies.
In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Udeme Edet, the attack took place early on March 13, 2026. Suspected armed herders targeted cashew farms in the Asaba, Ojantele, and Okpette communities while farmers were working.
The police reported that a joint security response team, comprising Nigeria Police Force personnel, military members, and local youths, promptly commenced search and rescue operations in the surrounding forests to locate victims and track the attackers.
During initial operations, six deceased individuals were found. Security agencies continue to work to secure the affected communities and locate any additional missing persons.
Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Emenari assured residents that more security personnel have been deployed to enhance operations and to coordinate a focused effort to apprehend those responsible for the violence.
In the meantime, security patrols have been increased across both the impacted communities and other areas within the state. This initiative aims to prevent further violence and reassure residents of the commitment from security agencies to protect lives and property.
The police have also urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with security forces by providing any useful information that could aid ongoing operations.
