Ex-Gov Ortom urges Benue youths to reject violence

Former Benue Governor Urges Youths to Reject Political Violence

Mbagwaza, Benue State — Former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, called on young people to reject violence and resist being exploited as political thugs. He shared this message during the burial of Aloysius Wuam, the former Chairman of the Benue State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), held on Saturday in Mbagwaza, Ushongo Local Government Area.

Ortom emphasized that youths should not allow themselves to be coerced into acts of aggression against political opponents. He challenged anyone advocating for violence to first consider sending their own children into such conflicts.

Moreover, he condemned recent disruptions of church services and public gatherings across the state, warning that these actions pose avoidable risks if left unaddressed. Ortom highlighted the existing challenges faced by Benue due to violence inflicted by militant Fulani herdsmen and urged against exacerbating the situation with political strife as the 2027 elections approach.

He also appealed to traditional rulers to maintain a neutral stance in politics, emphasizing their role as cultural custodians and community leaders.

Ortom paid tribute to Wuam, describing him as a person of notable character whose life demonstrated commitment to justice, unity, and public service. He remarked on Wuam’s dedication to teamwork and collective progress, noting his stabilizing influence within the party.

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro added his condolences, recognizing Wuam as a devoted public servant whose impact on the state’s political landscape was significant. He urged those vying for leadership in 2027 to prioritize the interests of Benue over personal ambitions.

The current chairman of the PDP in Benue State, Ezekiel Adaji, praised Wuam’s legacy of service, integrity, and mentorship, asserting that it would continue to inspire party members.

Additional dignitaries present at the funeral included Chief Ambrose Pine Iortyer, the Tor Kwande; Dr. Simon Gabo, a member of the State House of Assembly; and Emmanuel Udende, the senator representing Benue North-East, who was represented at the event.
