Mob attack wanted robbery suspect, recover pump-action gun in Enugu

Suspected Armed Robber Captured in Enugu State Market

Residents of Eke Market Square in Akiyi, Umulokpa, Uzo Uwani Local Government Area, apprehended a suspected armed robber on March 13, 2026, after he was seen carrying a pump-action firearm. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Friday Onwujekwu, also known as “Nwatico,” was wanted by the Enugu State Police Command following a prior incident where he allegedly attacked a member of a local neighborhood watch.

According to police sources, Onwujekwu reportedly assaulted Okechukwu Dennis Okoaku in January 2026, taking his pump-action firearm before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses reported spotting Onwujekwu at the market around 3:30 p.m. on March 13, armed with the same weapon. After his capture, a mob attacked him, leading to his serious injuries. Police intervened promptly and transported him to the Police Clinic in Enugu for initial treatment. He has since been transferred to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in Ituku-Ozalla, where he remains under medical care.

Authorities have assigned the investigation to the Enugu Police Command’s Crack Squad. Security officials have stated that the overall safety situation in the region remains stable, supported by ongoing patrols and community monitoring efforts.
