Anambra Police Confirm Fatal Shooting in Awka; Manhunt Underway
Awka, Nigeria — The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that two individuals were killed in a shooting attributed to suspected cultists on Sunday evening in Awka, the state capital.
In a statement released by police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, authorities condemned the incident and expressed their commitment to tracking down the assailants. The police urged the public to come forward with information that could aid in the investigation.
Preliminary reports indicate that three unidentified individuals traveling in a silver Toyota Corolla, whose license plate remains unknown, opened fire on two separate victims in different locations within the city.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene and transported the victims to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. One victim has not yet been identified; the other has been named as Aiza Nwosu, a well-known personality in Awka.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, police recovered several items from the scene, including 7,550 Naira, a Moniepoint ATM card, and a pair of slippers.
Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama condemned the incident as “unacceptable” and a significant threat to public safety in the state. He has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation. Security measures, including increased patrols and enhanced surveillance, have also been implemented in Awka and surrounding areas.
The police continue to seek the public’s assistance in identifying those responsible for the shooting.
