Another victim stabbed to death by suspected gang member in Calabar

Young Man Stabbed to Death in Calabar Amid Rising Gang Violence

CALABAR, Nigeria — A young man was fatally stabbed in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, on Monday morning, sparking renewed concerns about gang-related violence in the area.

The incident unfolded along Mary Slessor Road, where the victim reportedly got into a dispute with a suspected gang member, leading to the attack. According to the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Akata, the suspect pursued the victim before stabbing him with a knife.

Following the assault, the victim was transported to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries. “The victim was confirmed dead by doctors after being taken to UCTH. The body has been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy,” Akata stated.

Authorities have confirmed the arrest of the suspect, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further examination.

This incident follows another recent case that has drawn public outrage. Community members reported that a young woman was murdered after being lured to an apartment by a suspect’s girlfriend. Allegedly, the suspect tried to dispose of the victim’s body parts before being detained by vigilantes, who handed him over to law enforcement.

However, police have indicated that no body was recovered from the scene, though traces of blood were found at the suspect’s residence.

Residents are increasingly alarmed by the resurgence of street gangs, locally known as “Skolombo Boys,” which are said to be reoccupying abandoned buildings, tunnels, and public parks. These groups, primarily composed of minors and teenagers, have been accused of engaging in violent crimes, robberies, and other illicit activities, especially during nighttime.
