South Carolina Governor Appoints Darline Graham Nordone as Interim Senator
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by her late brother, Lindsey Graham. The move comes with the backing of former President Donald Trump.
Nordone’s appointment, announced Monday, ensures that the Republican majority in the Senate remains intact. She will serve the remainder of Lindsey Graham’s term, which ends on January 3, 2027.
Although Nordone has no formal political experience, she has been involved in campaigns alongside her brother, including his bid for the presidency in 2016. Currently, she leads the South Carolina Commission for the Blind.
In her first public comments following the appointment, Nordone expressed her intent to continue her brother’s legacy. Lindsey Graham was known for his strong support of Israel and vocal advocacy in favor of U.S. actions in Iran.
“I promise to work hard over the next several months to support the president and carry forward the efforts of my brother on behalf of the citizens of South Carolina and the United States,” Nordone said.
She has not announced plans to run for a full Senate term in the upcoming election. The Republican Party will hold primaries next month to select a candidate to compete against Democratic candidate Annie Andrews, a pediatrician.
Earlier on Monday, Trump publicly urged McMaster to appoint Nordone, stating on his Truth Social platform, “I recommended … Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!”
Lindsey Graham, who passed away at the age of 71, had previously indicated that Nordone would be a key part of his support network during his presidential campaign. He often spoke highly of her capabilities, suggesting she would represent the country well.
McMaster praised Graham during the announcement of Nordone’s appointment, calling him “irresistible” and “irreplaceable.” He noted the close bond between the siblings, stating, “Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It’s my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now.”
