Bill seeking establishment of teaching hospital in Manchok passes second reading

Senate Advances Bill for New Teaching Hospital in Kaduna

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday advanced a bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences Teaching Hospital in Manchok, located in the Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Sponsored by Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, who represents the Kaduna South Senatorial District, the legislation was debated in the Senate chamber before receiving support from lawmakers.

During the discussion, Senator Katung emphasized the necessity of the teaching hospital, citing the recent establishment of the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia. He stated that the hospital is essential for providing clinical training to medical students and healthcare professionals.

“The hospital will offer clinical training for medical doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals, while also expanding access to specialist healthcare services for residents of Southern Kaduna and neighboring communities,” Katung said.

He further noted that the initiative would create job opportunities and enhance healthcare infrastructure, addressing the existing shortage of tertiary medical facilities in the region.

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, presided over the session and described the bill as straightforward. He stated that the proposed institution would bridge a significant gap in healthcare delivery and medical education in Kaduna South and across Nigeria.

Senator Barau also reflected on his previous sponsorship of the bill that established the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, which is now operational.

Following a voice vote, the Senate passed the bill for a second reading and has referred it to the Senate Committee on Health Institutions for further legislative review. The committee is expected to report back within four weeks.
