Paris Saint-Germain Struggles in Ligue 1, Faces Early Season Adversity

PARIS—Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is experiencing its worst start to a league season in nearly two decades, concluding three matches of the Ligue 1 season without a victory, following a 2-1 home loss to Monaco on Friday.
The defeat leaves PSG with only two points from their opening three matches, marking the team’s poorest start since the 2007-08 season, a campaign that saw them dangerously close to relegation. In that season, PSG managed to secure their first win only after six matches and finished just three points above the relegation zone.
Despite the troubling start, PSG management has shown confidence in head coach Luis Enrique, extending his contract through 2030 just days before the team begins its Champions League title defense.
After the loss to Monaco, in which PSG led at halftime but conceded two goals in the second half, Enrique addressed the media. He dismissed concerns about his team’s performance, pointing out that Monaco only had two shots on target, both of which resulted in goals. “There is no reason to be concerned. We’ll see at the end of the season whether things balance out,” he stated.
Enrique emphasized that focus should not solely be on the final score, highlighting that PSG’s pressing was significantly better than in previous matches where they held their opponents scoreless. “Monaco knows that if they play against us like this 10 times, we win eight, there’d be one draw and we’d lose once. This was that one defeat,” he insisted.
Looking ahead, PSG is set to host Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday for their opening match of the Champions League group stage, with the team aiming for a third consecutive European title.
Currently, PSG finds itself seven points behind the league leaders. Enrique remains optimistic, saying, “It is incredible motivation for my players, for the team and for the club. If you want to bet on who will be champions at the end of the season, we can place a bet. Seven points? OK, we will try to make up that deficit as quickly as possible.”
