Nigerian comedian Ayo Makun, known as AY, recently shared his experience with a driverless Uber in the United States, comparing the technology to practices in Africa that he described as using “juju” for harm.
In a video posted online, AY demonstrated the autonomous vehicle operating without human intervention as it transported him to his destination. “This car drives by itself. This is my Uber, taking me where I need to go,” he noted.
The comedian explained that he was able to unlock the vehicle and initiate the ride using his phone. His comments highlighted the disparities in technological advancement between various regions.
“When foreigners say they are ahead of us, many tend to argue,” AY remarked. He criticized those who rely on traditional practices instead of embracing technological innovations. “While you use your own juju to do different things, you’re harming people in Africa,” he added.
AY’s encounter with the driverless Uber occurred on his birthday.
