EPL: ‘He would have destroyed them’ – Petit happy Vinicius Jr didn’t join Arsenal
Former Chelsea player Emmanuel Petit has expressed that signing Brazilian forward Vinicius Jr. would not have been beneficial for Arsenal.
While acknowledging Vinicius Jr.’s impressive talent, Petit raised concerns about the player’s mentality, suggesting it may not align with the team’s culture. In an interview with BoyleSports, he reflected on the potential challenges Mikel Arteta might face in managing the forward’s ego, which could disrupt the dynamics within the squad.
“I consider Vinicius Jr. to be an incredibly gifted player. However, I am uncertain if his mentality aligns well with that of the team,” Petit said. He noted the presence of several humble players at Arsenal and cautioned that introducing someone with a markedly different attitude could create issues, especially given Arteta’s management style. He referenced a recent altercation between Vinicius Jr. and José Mourinho during a match between Real Betis and Real Madrid to illustrate his point.
Petit recalled a similar incident involving Xabi Alonso the previous season, where Alonso’s refusal to shake hands was a source of controversy. He opined that Vinicius Jr. has faced substantial criticism from fans and media, and in those moments, his responses may not have conveyed the appropriate message. “While I would have loved to see a player of Vinicius Jr.’s caliber at Arsenal, his mentality and ego would likely have created a challenging environment to manage,” he said.
Vinicius Jr. has recently renewed his contract with Real Madrid, securing his commitment to the club until 2032.
