Federal Government Distributes N10 Billion in Medical Supplies to Bauchi State
Bauchi State, Nigeria – The Federal Government has initiated the distribution of medical equipment, ambulances, essential drugs, and other healthcare supplies, with an estimated total value of N10 billion. This effort is aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery in the region.
The distribution event took place on Saturday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) and was officiated by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate. He was joined by officials from the Bauchi State Government and various stakeholders.
Pate emphasized that this initiative forms part of the government’s strategy to bolster primary healthcare service delivery throughout the country, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He noted that similar interventions have been executed across 35 states, focusing on investments in health infrastructure, medical equipment, essential medications, workforce development, and emergency medical services. According to Pate, these government-supported health programs currently provide services to over 45 million Nigerians each quarter.
Highlighting Bauchi’s particular benefits from federal health investments, Pate referenced several projects, including upgrades to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Azare and the establishment of the National North-East Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) Centre in Ningi. He also mentioned the ongoing expansion of ATBUTH, which includes the construction of a modern radiology and diagnostic center.
Additionally, Pate indicated that over 100 primary healthcare centers within the state have been renovated or upgraded as part of the collaboration between the Federal and Bauchi State governments. He further disclosed that thousands of frontline healthcare workers have undergone specialized training, with more than 3,000 youths from Bauchi securing employment in federal health institutions nationwide.
Regarding the distribution specifics, Pate announced that 20 primary healthcare centers would receive medical equipment, while another 20 facilities would be provided with essential drugs and consumables across all 20 local government areas in the state. The supplies include labor and delivery kits, suction machines, oxygen equipment, blood pressure monitors, surgical theatre apparatus, neonatal intensive care equipment, and laboratory facilities essential for maternal and child healthcare.
The initiative also includes the provision of 15 rural ambulances, six standard ambulances, and 17,000 maternity kits aimed at promoting safe deliveries and alleviating the financial burden of maternal healthcare.
Pate estimated the intervention’s total value, encompassing equipment, ambulances, drugs, and consumables, at N10 billion. He underscored the importance of proper use of the supplies and warned against any potential diversion, asserting that any instances of misconduct would be met with legal consequences.
The minister encouraged political leaders and stakeholders to prioritize developmental cooperation to enhance the welfare of Nigerians.
Representing the Bauchi State Government, Deputy Governor Muhammad Awwal Jatau, standing in for Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, expressed gratitude for the federal intervention. He affirmed that the state government remains committed to improving health services through the rehabilitation of hospitals, enhancement of primary healthcare facilities, recruitment of additional health workers—especially in rural areas—and ongoing investments in nutrition initiatives targeting severe acute malnutrition among children and pregnant women.
Jatau reiterated the state’s intention to collaborate closely with the Federal Government and development partners to further improve healthcare services.
In receipt of the equipment, Prof. Bara Yusuf Jibrin, Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, assured that the medical supplies would be allocated appropriately across designated facilities and managed responsibly. He affirmed the commitment of federal health institutions to maintain and effectively utilize the equipment to bolster healthcare delivery, research, and resilience in the health system.
