Fire Outbreak in Ilorin Linked to Power Surge
ILORIN, Nigeria — A power surge sparked a fire on Monday afternoon in a 14-room residential building located at 40 Elesinla Compound, off Agbo-Oba Road in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State.
The fire broke out around 2:03 p.m. and affected four of the rooms in the building. According to Hassan Adekunle, a spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, the surge ignited flammable materials in the affected area.
Firefighters arrived on the scene quickly and brought the blaze under control by approximately 2:50 p.m., preventing further damage to the remaining rooms and surrounding properties.
Muhammed Alabi, the Director of the State Fire Service, urged residents to ensure their homes are equipped with standard electrical installations and surge protection devices. He emphasized the importance of regular inspections and maintenance of electrical systems, avoiding overloaded sockets, and reporting fire incidents immediately to the fire service.
