Drama as TUC rejects FG’s N70,000 allowance, demands N300,000 salary

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has formally rejected the N70,000 allowance proposed by the Federal Government, instead demanding a substantial salary increase to N300,000.

The announcement came in a statement released by TUC President Festus Osifo and Secretary-General N.A. Toro on Wednesday, following the government’s new allowance package for workers.

The union criticized the N70,000 allowance, describing it as unrealistic and insufficient to address the significant economic challenges facing Nigerian workers. “Given the rising cost of living, high inflation, and the removal of the fuel subsidy, the proposed amount is grossly inadequate,” the TUC stated.

In response, the TUC is advocating for a salary of N300,000 as a more viable solution to alleviate the economic strain on workers. The union emphasized that it would not accept anything less and insisted that Nigerian workers deserve improved compensation.

The TUC also expressed concern regarding the government’s failure to fulfill previous promises, which has eroded trust in agreements between labor unions and government authorities. The statement urged all levels of government to implement measurable interventions aimed at reducing the costs of essential goods and services, ensuring timely payment of salaries and pensions, protecting existing jobs, curbing exploitative labor practices, and revitalizing the productive sector to foster decent employment.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the Federal Government regarding the TUC’s demands.
