Fire ravages shops in Oyo market, hotel in Ibadan
Goods valued at millions of naira were destroyed in a fire that engulfed several shops at Akunlemu Market in Oyo town, Oyo State, on Tuesday night. The extensive blaze damaged a significant number of retailers before firefighters were able to bring it under control.
Fortunately, authorities reported that no casualties occurred as a result of the fire. The chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident and noted that by the time firefighters arrived, flames had already spread through the affected shops. He stated that fire crews acted quickly to contain the situation, preventing further damage to surrounding properties.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a hotel in the Abayomi area of Ibadan, the state capital, early Wednesday morning. The blaze reportedly caused substantial property damage, but again, no injuries were reported. Akinwande confirmed that the flames engulfed a storey building consisting of four rooms that served as both a hotel and lounge.
Additionally, Akinwande addressed a separate incident involving a tanker truck that overturned in the Moniya area of Ibadan. The trailer, identified by registration number FKJ 843 XL (Lagos), was loaded with approximately 45,000 liters of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). The crash occurred at a primary health center along New Moniya Road, with emergency crews responding to the scene.
Fire officials are currently investigating the cause of the fires and the circumstances surrounding the tanker accident.
