Guarantee safety of NYSC members – MURIC tells Tinubu

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged the Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, to suspend the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program until the ongoing insecurity issues in the country are addressed.

The call was made in a statement by MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Isiaq Akintola, on Friday. His remarks followed the recent abduction of several prospective NYSC members, who were later released.

In addition to requesting a suspension of the program, Akintola called for the discharge of the kidnapped individuals, emphasizing that it is the government’s duty to ensure the safety of corps members.

He stated, “We cannot but conclude that the scheme’s greatest challenge is insecurity. Our young ones do not deserve this punishment. The Federal Government has the responsibility, in loco parentis, to ensure their protection.”

Akintola added that due to the government’s apparent inability to guarantee the security of corps members at this time, it is necessary to temporarily halt the NYSC scheme until the situation can be effectively controlled.
