‘Hip-hop is dead’ – Rapper Odumodublvck claims

Nigerian Rapper Faces Backlash for Controversial Remarks on Hip-Hop
Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has provoked significant debate following his statement regarding the state of hip-hop music. The artist sparked controversy by echoing a provocative assertion made by fellow musician Wizkid, claiming that hip-hop is no longer relevant.
In a recent post on social media platform X, Odumodublvck stated, “Hip Hop is dead,” in reference to a list of Nigerian artists with the highest monthly listeners on Spotify. His comment drew attention to the absence of Nigerian rappers from the current rankings, which are dominated by singers.
Responses to the rapper’s assertion have been mixed, with many critics accusing him of undermining the genre. They argue that hip-hop remains influential beyond Nigeria’s borders, despite the current streaming statistics.
As it stands, the top ten list of Nigerian artists on Spotify features no rappers. Burna Boy leads with 40.68 million monthly listeners, followed closely by Tems at 40.64 million. Rema ranks third with 29.43 million listeners, while Ayra Starr and Wizkid occupy the fourth and fifth positions, with 16.84 million and 16.81 million monthly listeners, respectively.
Completing the top ten are Omah Lay with 11.24 million, Davido with 10.83 million, CKay at 10.71 million, Fireboy DML with 9.23 million, and Asake with 8.69 million listeners.
